View Cargo Van Insurance coverageWhat Commercial Trucking Insurance Actually Covers
Commercial trucking insurance isn't a single policy — it's a stack of coverages that FMCSA, your state DOT, freight brokers and shippers all require in different combinations. A working policy for a for-hire motor carrier typically layers primary auto liability, physical damage on the tractor and trailer, motor truck cargo for the freight you haul, non-trucking liability (bobtail) for off-dispatch use, general liability for premises exposure, and workers' compensation for company drivers.
Get any one of those wrong and either your authority is at risk (FMCSA suspension for lapsed BMC-91), your dispatch is frozen (broker COI rejected), or you're personally exposed to six-figure claims (bobtail collision with no NTL). We build the whole stack — not just the auto policy — so you can run without gaps.
The Coverage Stack We Build for Motor Carriers
- Primary auto liability — Filed with FMCSA by your insurer on a BMC-91 or BMC-91X. Federal minimum is generally $750k for interstate for-hire general freight in vehicles of 10,001 lbs or more; hazmat and certain operations run $1M–$5M. Brokers and shippers frequently require $1M regardless.
- Motor truck cargo — $100k minimum for most brokers; $250k+ for high-value commodities. Separate from auto liability.
- Physical damage — Collision and comprehensive on the power unit and trailer at stated or agreed value.
- Non-trucking liability (bobtail) — Covers the truck off-dispatch. Required by every carrier lease.
- Trailer interchange — Covers trailers you pull that don't belong to you (drop-and-hook, pool trailers).
- General liability — Premises, loading, unloading and completed operations exposure.
- Workers' comp or occupational accident — WC for W-2 drivers, occ-acc for 1099 owner-operators.
- Umbrella / excess liability — Increasingly required by brokers on loads with high injury exposure ($2M–$5M).
2026 Trucking Insurance Cost Ranges (Per Truck / Year)
Real premiums we placed in the last 12 months across 20+ states. Bottom of each range = established authority, clean 3-year loss run, mature driver mix. Top of range = new authority under 12 months or drivers under 2 years CDL-A.
- Owner-operator, leased on: $3,500–$7,500 (physical damage + NTL + occ-acc)
- Owner-operator, own authority: $12,000–$20,000 (full stack)
- Hot shot, own authority: $6,000–$12,000
- Semi-truck OTR, established: $9,000–$16,000
- Box truck, local delivery: $4,500–$9,000
- Cargo van, DSP / last-mile: $3,000–$6,500
- Small fleet (5–10 units): $8,500–$14,000 per unit (blended)

- Tow truck / wrecker: $5,000–$15,000 (light vs. heavy)
FMCSA Filings We Handle
Insurance and authority filings are inseparable — an unfiled BMC-91 shuts down your MC number in 30 days. We file every FMCSA form required for the coverage we place, at no additional agency fee.
- BMC-91 / BMC-91X — Proof-of-insurance filing submitted to FMCSA by your insurance company (motor carriers).
- BMC-84 — $75,000 surety bond for freight brokers.
- BMC-34 — Cargo insurance filing (household goods movers).
- MCS-90 — Endorsement attached to the policy evidencing financial responsibility.
- BOC-3 — Designation of process agents for service of legal documents. It is a registration filing, not insurance coverage.
- Form E / Form H — State-level insurance and cargo filings where required (Texas, Illinois, Kansas, others).
