Automotive Industry Insurance — Repair, Body, Parts & Dealers

The automotive sector spans far more than mechanics — it covers auto parts wholesalers and retailers, new car franchised dealers, used car independent dealers, body and paint shops, mobile mechanics, fleet maintenance, automobile services, and detail operations. Each sub-segment carries exposures that standard small-business policies don't address: customer vehicles in care/custody/control, paint booth pollution, parts inventory shrinkage, dealer's open lot exposure, F&I errors and omissions, manufacturer warranty obligations, dealer surety bonds, and loaner-fleet auto liability. We write the full automotive spectrum through carriers built specifically for the garage, dealer and parts classes — from single-bay shops to multi-state franchised dealer groups.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between garage liability and garagekeepers?

Garage liability covers your liability to third parties — premises injuries and damage caused by your business operations or vehicles you own. Garagekeepers covers physical damage to customers' vehicles while they're in your care, custody or control. You need both. Garagekeepers can be written direct primary (pays regardless of fault) or legal liability (only when you're negligent) — direct primary is the customer-friendly option most modern shops choose.

Do body shops need different coverage than mechanical shops?

Yes. Body shops add paint booth pollution, frame rack equipment, OEM-certification compliance exposure, faulty-repair claims that often involve airbag and ADAS calibration, and higher loaner-fleet usage. We write dedicated body shop programs with paint booth, pollution and high-limit garagekeepers built in.

What insurance do auto parts dealers need?

Auto parts dealers (wholesale, retail, warehouse distributors, jobbers) need products liability for defective or counterfeit parts, commercial property for inventory (often $500K–$5M+), inland marine for parts in transit, crime/employee dishonesty for inventory shrinkage, commercial auto for delivery vehicles, and cyber liability if processing online or B2B credit accounts. We write parts-dealer programs with class-specific products limits up to $5M occurrence.

What does a new car franchised dealer need beyond a used-car dealer?

Franchised new car dealers add: F&I (Finance & Insurance) Errors & Omissions for the F&I office selling extended warranties and GAP, manufacturer warranty compliance E&O, higher Dealers Open Lot limits (often $5M–$25M for inventory), demo and dealer-plate fleet auto, employment practices liability for larger sales staff, cyber liability for DMS and credit-app exposure, and umbrella stacking $5M–$25M. We write single-point franchised dealers and multi-rooftop dealer groups.

Can you write a used-car dealer that also does repairs?

Yes. Combined dealer + service operations need a Dealers Open Lot policy for inventory, a separate motor vehicle dealer bond (state-required, typically $25K–$75K), garage liability, garagekeepers for service customers, and DMV/title agent E&O. We bundle the full program.

Do I need pollution coverage for an auto shop?

Yes. Standard garage liability policies exclude pollution from solvents, used motor oil, refrigerants, brake dust and paint overspray. A pollution endorsement or stand-alone Garage Operations Pollution Legal Liability policy is essential — environmental claims regularly exceed $250K and EPA fines can shut down a shop.

What surety bonds do auto dealers need?

State motor vehicle dealer bonds are required to obtain a dealer license — Florida $25K, Texas $25K-$50K, California $50K, etc. We write all 50 states' dealer bonds plus DMV title-agent bonds, salvage dealer bonds and auction bonds. Same-day issuance available.

Can you cover a multi-location body shop chain or dealer group?

Yes. We write portfolio programs for 2 to 100+ rooftops with master schedule, consolidated garagekeepers and DOL, fleet auto for transporters, loaners and demos, and umbrella stacking. Multi-state and multi-location is a core Garzor automotive specialty.
